Well, then. So, I just finished watching my illicit copy of Island, my copy still hasn’t shown up yet, grrrrrrrrrrr, but anyway, yeah just finished and, well…
Good points, they captured the feel wonderfully and the cinematography was amazing. Yeah, that’s about all I got, well, that and Colin.
Honestly, this was… well, do any of you remember a little Irish thing from ’90 called The Field; Richard Harris was up for Best Actor at the Oscars for it, yeah, very Irish, very, very, Irish, lot of really great actors (Sean Bean and Brenda Flicker and ppl like that- incl the voice of a certainslashdragon we all know and love) and great cinematography… and rain, lots and lots of rain… yes, well, umm, yes… this was a bit better in that I had read the book so understood HALF THE BLOODY SHITE THEY LEFT OUT. And how the HELLS is someone supposed to understand or follow this without knowing the turmoil in Nikki’s brain and how she is almost psychotically interpreting even the slightest thing and the fear and confusion she feels, how? I mean really, HOW? It’s not there, I mean it’s obvious that the actress, what’s it, Natalie something, yeah, well, it’s obvious she knows these things and she’s trying her damnedest to convey them, but they give us no point of reference. And I can’t say I like the way they altered the blatant foreshadowing, I mean it was obvious in the book that’s what it was, but they held it to the end here and that detracted, as did the changes they made in the actual scene, it was much more powerful on all levels in the book considering the placement in the timeline and the subject matter! At least then it gave some substance to Nikki’s latter actions, and remember one of my biggest problems with the book was the seeming 180 Nikki did when it came to Calum, so yeah, me saying that that scene in the book was better for the sake of that change is kinda scary. *huffs*
Now, am I glad I watched it? Yes, and I do plan on watching it again after my brain has settled and I don’t have HS sitting next to me studying the TV intently until about half way through when she just blurts out, “He looks like Merlin,” then loses interest and goes off to play on the computer after I refuse to affirm her suspicions (though honestly that did hold quite a bit of amusement value, lol)- last thing I need is her running around going “we watched a movie with Merlin.” ‘m still playing down the random “You’re the Voice” Burger King incident (MM: “Mys loves this song, she listens to it all the time” Me: “No, I don’t.” HS: “Yes, it’s with Merlin.” *head desk*). Where was I? Oh yes, watching it again, I do plan to and maybe I can look at it a bit clearer, I am the first to admit I kept getting distracted by Colin’s hands and the way the fidgeted and did that whole shy power thing, half the time I could feel the tension in his hands where he was holding back or being so delicate… it was very distracting, but gods was it great acting, lol.
I guess that’s as good a point as any to launch into my Colin flailing, yes. So Colin, what can I say, I loved him. I loved that he managed to let the character change in its small ways without changing, which was something I was worried about because it would be so easy to do with the character and the plot, I liked that. I will tangent here to say I also liked how Nikki’s character flowed better, she still held the strange unexplained sharp changes, but I think even in the book some of that was meant to show her fractured emotional state and while the book simply did it without trying to convey that aspect Natalie did it while conveying that, so kudos to her. And yeah, I was right, all those images I had where ‘omgs I can see him doing this’ were exactly like that, it was a thing of beauty. And the accent, wow, I mean, wow... for anyone who wants to say ‘oh you just watched this and saw “Merlin”’ ‘cause ppl do and actors do, I mean you watch something and it’s watching Blah Character do this or that, it’s not watching Blah Actor do this or that. Then in some special cases you get those things you go into not sure what to expect, but knowing it’s got Colin fucking Morgan in it and while you’re watching you keep having to stop and remind yourself that OMGs that’s Colin, that is not some strange other unknown actor, that is not “Merlin”, that IS “Calum” his own creature, his own entity, and seriously I don’t care how mediocre the film/show/play/whatever is, when a performer makes you lose sight of the fact that they are an actor and make you only see the character that’s fucking incredible, you don’t see that enough and it’s a thing to be cherished.
To sum up, as if anyone’s actually reading this, lol-
Island on the whole is okay, but it makes more sense if you’ve read the book, which is a big negative for me.
Colin is totally unequivocally worth seeing this movie for, if only to see how it should be done.
If you’re watching this to see “Colin” or “Merlin” you’re gonna be disappointed, if you’re watching it to see a truly proper portrayal of a character, omgs, heaven.
