heavenlyxbodies: (SPN smite)

Okay, I wanna prepare you guys, just so no one has a heart attack or anything, but today's post (or at least this post) is getting back to my fanish roots- I have finally finished watch S7 of SPN and I am here to rant about discuss it, or at least throw my opinions onto the bonfire.

Overall- it sucked. And that's disregarding the Bobby and Castiel issues, which let's face it were MAJOR issues. For the record I am and always have been a Cas!girl, but as much as I love our angel, he was not a founding part of SPN and while the show would be greatly detracted from by his 'death' it would not have been a deal breaker, at least if it was done right. On the other hand, Bobby would be, or come damn close to being, a deal breaker, so it took a lot, a whole lot for me to watch S7, but SPN has been one of my favourite shows since the Implala first rolled up to that bridge in the pilot (even if they did have a glass pack in her, I mean really, who would put a glass pack in a sweet piece like that, but anyway...) and I will not be dissuaded easily, and esp after hearing the news about Gamble leaving and Carver taking over it made watching it a lot easier, lol.

But anyway, it sucked.

I mentioned in my last post that I couldn't understand how canon could make the characters act so OOC. This is not Merlin wherein it is practically canon for them to randomly act OOC, this is SPN where our characters have very defined aspects of their character, things that don't change, possibly heightened or strengthened, but still very defined and anytime things happen that take them out of any of those aspects we know something is wrong. But here it felt like they were all over the place and when in situations where historically X would have been their reaction or at least the undercurrent to their reaction it was completely missing. I swear sometimes I felt like we'd gone back to S6 with creepy soulless Sam only he took Dean along for the ride- you guys have seen My Bloody Valentine, right, well Jensen at the end, demonic, creepy Jensen, yeah, I felt like Dean could've turned into that at any second, then next ep he'd be emo!Dean or what passes for emo!Dean, and not the Dean working (or not working as the case maybe) through the situation or, dare I say it, his feelings. *sighs* I mean, Sam I could understand doing all that, what with Hell, and Luci, and the Cage, and his soul and lack of soul; Sammy has a reason to be all over the charts. Honestly, Sammy (for the most part) was the only one who seemed in character for the season.

Now then, the Bobby thing. WHY? Just someone answer me that- why? What was the point of killing him off? What purpose did it serve? Any? And being a ghost? Even less purpose served... I would've expected there to at least be a reason. There was nothing, absolutely nothing accomplished by that, they didn't even try to accomplish anything with it. I mean, however much I disliked it, at least Castiel's 'death' had a point.
And one thing that bugs the ever living shit outta me- Bobby's been a ghost for months, right, and he hasn't gotten the hang of moving things about, not like picking up and moving, right, and then when someone tries to explain it to him he still can't get it. BUT Sam and Dean pick it up in under a day in "Death Takes a Holiday" (4x15, I think it was), and really you mean to tell me Bobby has more issues to work through than the two of them do, esp with the demon blood and being yanked from Hell and everything. It makes no sense... hello, study your own canon ppl.

Add to that the stories weren't very good and the ones that were were the so-called 'filler eps' (though not all, not by a long shot). And the overall storyline, Leviathans and all... blech, or maybe blah, it was disjointed and played out badly. Sure in the beginning it was trucking along nicely, I was even thinking it might go somewhere better than I'd expected, then somewhere after "Shut Up, Dr. Phil" it was like someone put the season plot and the filler plots and the bits in between into a blender and didn't even running it on full power just those short little bursts to give the illusion of being thoroughly mixed, so you had a chunk of main storyline with random bits of generic stuff put in and filler eps with hints of main plot, and not like spiced through, more like a rock thrown randomly through a window. It really felt like someone decided halfway through the season that they had to fast forward the storyline to get it all in, and then did it badly. We all remember S3 when it got cut short because of the writers' strike, but even then when they really did have to fast forward the storyline it didn't feel disjointed, yeah you would've liked more, but you didn't feel like you were being force fed something just to get it out of the way. I guess that's one of those glaring differences between Kripke and Gamble.

And the season finale... Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay... I'm still trying to follow it. And Crowley breaking his own deal? What's with that? I thought there were big consequences for a demon double crossing on a deal, even if he's the King of Hell, I thought it was one of those ingrained things like prophets having Archangels on their shoulders. Speaking of, how come Kevin only had a handful of regular angels guarding him? Did Cas manage to kill off all the Archangels? Anyway, even if it isn't an automatic set of consequences for Crowley, that's the kind of thing that's going to get around, and Crowley and other demons have said before that while they can't be trusted if they go around breaking deals it's bad for business. Okay, maybe I could accept the trade off between a, erm, black mark doesn't seem exactly right, but we'll go with it, so yes, the trade off between a black mark on your character (such as it may be for a demon) and having the world to play in (however, covertly) and Canada- really, Canada? Nothing against Canadians, but yeah, lots of land, but the per capita can't be the greatest and there are lots of demons out there. Can you imagine the bloodshed, well, demon bloodshed as they cut each other's throats in the ensuing 'territorial' power struggle? Good way for the Levis to cull the demon herd as it were, I guess.

Alright, spent half the morning being sick and it feels like it's coming on again, so 'm gonna shut up now and go nurse my tummy.

P.S. That scene when Dean gives Cas back his trench... priceless, probably the best thing about the entire season.
